About Duende
Abel Selaocoe doesn’t think in boxes: classically trained, but with strong South African roots, he effortlessly navigates between genres and styles. He combines improvisation, singing and body percussion with Western and non-Western music. His ability to connect all these traditions resonates in Duende, a dialogue between African music and Western European baroque. Several centuries and a whole continent apart, but with surprisingly many similarities.
Rhythmic drive and drawn-out melodies alternate. The two traditions flirt with each other and challenge each other. Duende is a celebration of cross-cultural musical joy.
