Ode to Bryce Dessner

This programme Little Blue Something focuses on the music of musician and composer Bryce Dessner, whom Ragazze Quartet considers one of the most interesting emerging composers of today. With his roots in pop and rock music – Dessner is the guitarist in the world-famous band The National – he is gaining increasing recognition as a contemporary “classical” composer. He has composed for renowned ensembles and orchestras such as Kronos Quartet, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Intercontemporain and has collaborated with composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang and many others. Dessner is also a sought-after film composer and has written soundtracks for films and series such as The Revenant and The Two Popes.

Dessner for String Quartet

Dessner’s music is characterised by tight rhythms, catchy melodies and a hint of minimal music. He wrote several string quartets commissioned by the Kronos Quartet. His string quartet Aheym (meaning ‘homecoming’) is inspired by Dessner’s grandmother’s stories about her journey to America. It refers to his roots as a Jewish immigrant from Poland and Russia. Little Blue Something is based on Czech folk music and Tenebre is about the celebration of light.

Dessner composed Tour Eiffel especially for the Brooklyn Youth Choir. This work is also on the programme.

Commissioned composition Calliope Tsoupaki

In Little Blue Something, Dessner’s string quartets are complemented by music from Caroline Shaw and Aart Strootman and a new commissioned work for string quartet and piano by Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki. Tsoupaki’s quintet is inspired by an important element of her homeland: the sea. Her composition will premiere on Saturday 28 September at September Me festival.
