Opera Forward Festival 2026

A powerful opera about resistance and hope

The Knife of Dawn tells the gripping story of Guyanese political activist and poet Martin Carter, who was imprisoned without charge for his struggle for his country’s autonomy. The Knife of Dawn is set in his prison cell and focuses on the 28th – and most critical – day of his hunger strike in protest against British rule. This opera by composer Hannah Kendall and librettist Tessa McWatt, both of Guyanese-Caribbean descent, brings Carter’s inner struggle to life. The director is Gavin-Viano, known for his socially engaged theatre work.

The Knife of Dawn is part of the Opera Forward Festival (OFF) 2026. Since 2016, OFF has been providing a platform for today’s opera makers, opening up new perspectives on opera and ourselves. Opera must move forward, out into the world! A mission that fits seamlessly with the reputation of the Ragazze Quartet.

Martin Carter

In 1953, Martin Carter, considered one of the most important writers from the Caribbean, was imprisoned. The Knife of Dawn gives voice to Carter’s hopes and despair – and everything in between – in an intense portrayal of his personal struggles and hallucinations. Will poetry or death be the most effective way to serve his country?

Hannah Kendall

Kendall’s particular interest in narratives of the African diaspora has exerted a powerful influence on much of her work. In her orchestral piece O flower of fire from 2023, she revisits Martin Carter’s poetry, specifically a text that touches on the complex sociological and religious fabric that makes up Guyana. Kendall’s own parents were Guyanese immigrants to England. Her recent music reflects and explores the blending of cultures in “creolistic” music – music whose sound sources and stylistic content reflect the wonderful possibilities of her own real and human world (source: Robert Kirzinger – Boston Symphony Orchestra).

In her latest album shouting forever into the receiver (left), composer Hannah Kendall explores the history of plantations and creolisation, inspired by Basquiat’s painting Tuxedo. She translates the forms, symbols and energy of his art into music.
